James A. Garfield High School
With an original attendance of only 282 students, Seattleās James A. Garfield High School has nevertheless played a key role in the evolution of the city. Built in 1920 in what is now known as the Central District, the school was in its early decades noted for its large number of Jewish, Japanese and Italian students. After World War II, the neighborhood saw an influx of African-American residents which continued throughout the sixties. Today, Garfield is well-known for its academic reputation, particularly in the fields of music and science.
